Day 21 – Speak, even…

I think we were all touched in some way earlier this year when the news broke of a young girl who had taken her own life. My heart tried to feel the pain of her parents and how would the agony they experienced having their daughter leave this world way too soon. No one can know how that feels, unless you have been there. Too many parents have been. The unanswered questions will possibly haunt them for a life time.

Amy ‘Dolly’ Everett died in January 2018, almost 15 years old. She had been bullied at school and to her it seemed there was only one way to end the torment.

Day 21 of the Advent Calendar for Making a Difference is Dolly’s Dream. A foundation founded by Dolly’s parents as a way to remember their beautiful girl – start a nationwide conversation about the devastating effects of bullying.

I’m sure many of us have a story to tell about being bullied or being the bully, particularly in school. Do we want the next generations to experience the same or is there something more we can do? It is Foundations such as Dolly’s Dream and the Alannah and Madeline Foundation that is opening the channels for change. There is long road ahead – from the actions of our politicians, particularly in Federal Government, to what we say and do on social media to how we speak to our children and others around us.

Speak, even if you voice shakes

There are numerous ways you can support Dolly’s Dream.

  • Organise a fundraiser
  • Donate money
  • Or purchase merchandise such as an Akubra hat, Work Shirt, or “Speak Up” song – check out the Facebook page for more details or head over to Country Rippa website.
  • Spend time with your family and LISTEN this Christmas, and always. Dolly’s parent will feel their loss this Christmas with an empty seat at their table. Our thoughts are with you.

Cherish your children and take time to get to know them. Talk with them, not at them. They are our future x
